Flower Composition - For members who have never won a FAR contest with a Flower
Flowers are the most often photographed subject in Photography. They are also consistently the worst photographed subject in Photography. Photographing flowers isn't just seeing a pretty flower, pointing your camera at it and snapping. Like all subjects it needs to have attention paid to all the elements of composition. It needs to be in focus, it needs to have an interesting background, it need simplifying, lacking clutter, it needs to have space. Additionally and specifically to flowers it should never be centered with space on each side. It is a good idea to shoot a flower at an angle, as you would a person who is looking away. It is rarely pleasing to shoot straight down on a flower. So whether you are shooting inside in a controlled environment or shooting outside, give some thought to composition before you snap that picture. If you are shooting outside, you should never attempt it on a windy day. Try and use a tripod when you can.
So for this contest I am going to have the CEC monitor the contest and give some specific guidelines to follow:
● Only members who have never won a contest on FAR with a flower can enter
● The flower or flowers must be in focus
● The flower cannot be centered unless it is full frame (that is not centering)
● No shooting straights down on the flower (s)
● The background cannot have distracting elements, such as people, pets, gardening tools, automobiles, etc., just to name a few. There can be elements in the background as long as they enhance the composition, like a bench, a fence, etc.
● The flower cannot be overexposed
● No unsightly blemishes left of the flower (s), leaves or stems.
