Composition - Centered

Composition - Centered - Photography

You will hear time and time again by both Photographers and Artists, not to center your subject. Why is that? Putting something in the middle of the picture makes it static, and face it, flat out boring. But are there ever times when you could and should be centered? Like all rules, this is one that is meant to be broken if the circumstances are right. So lets just list a few:

● Centering can be used in creative lighting techniques, such as spot lighting and halo effects.
● Centering to create a sense of space or size, for example you have a large subject but it is surrounded by several small objects
● Centering is an effective way to draw attention to your subject when there are very few other items in the composition. When taking photographs of stand alone objects where background and foreground are not shown and the subject will nearly fill the frame, centering works to maintain focus on the subject.
● Center when your subject is symmetrical. With a symmetrical focal point, offset composition makes no sense and is one of the few acceptable exceptions to the infamous Rule of Thirds.
● The focal point or subject is dramatic enough and there is nothing else in the frame that would draw the eye away.

Never center by default, only center when it makes sense to do so and your image still remains interesting.

So the theme of this contest is to Photograph something that is centered, and should be. Make sure the photograph is still interesting and not static, or boring. Be creative.

Minor mixed media is allowed.
