Shoot the Unattractive Contest Entry
We meet this little girl a time ago. We discovered her village accidentally when we were looking for a way too some not so known Maya ruins.
The village is about 20 miles from the next tourist 'All inclusive' were a room is 200 - 500 $ US a night. [Quintana Roo, Mexico] The village has no electricity. Water comes from the cenote [sinkhole] of the village. There was no doctor or school. In spite of the poverty the people live in we were friendly welcomed and got help with a broken tire. Our village adopted this Mayan community. There is a school now and a doctor comes for visits. The teachers and the doctor have to take the bus. A hour rite from Chetumal.
This was the last day of school before Christmas. We had brought school supplies, gifts, food and a piƱata with sweets for a fiesta. The girl is waiting for her older siblings she has gathered her gifts and some food for the family. She is happy for the moment but she doesn't smile jet. We try to bring smiles to these children but there are so many.
This girl is beautiful as all children. Poverty is not only 'unatractive' it is ugly.

The Girl was cropped out from a bigger picture. The background was converted to black and white with Digital Imagine Suite 2006. I decided to do so since I think the area were the girl is sitting is important for the story but the wall and the clutter on her feet were distracting to much from the girl.
