This is one of the about 500 native species of Passion Flower Vines native to Central- and South America.
The flower is surrounded by legend and romance and the jury is still out why the flower got her name. Wile the most common interpretation is based on the legend associated with Christianity it is also said that the flowers and fruits of the edible varieties have aphrodisiac qualities.
Early missionaries at the tropical Americas named these unique build flowers Passiflora [Passion Flower] and used the flower parts to tell the story of the death of Jesus to help to convert native Americans to Christianity. In the legend the ten petals and sepals represent the ten apostles present at the crucifixion. The filaments are representing the crown of thorns or the halo. The five stamens are a signification of the five wounds to hands, feet and torso of Jesus. The green leafs are representing the passion of Christ.
