The River Murray is Australia's longest river at 2,995km (1,861 miles) travelling from the Australian Alps across inland plains of New South Wales, Victoria and ending its journey in South Australia. The Murray is the largest river in South Australia. Despite discharging considerable volumes of water at times, particularly before the advent of large scale river regulation, the Mouth has always been comparatively small and shallow and over recent years through times of drought dredging has been used to try and keep the mouth open.
