Artist Notes
Yunnan is the southwestern most province in China. This is a photo of women rice planting, still by hand at the base of the Changshang Mountain range! They are bent like this for 10 hours a day with a lunch break included, when they see us walking past, they extend a rice bowl to us inviting us to "chu fan" that means eat a meal with us. They harvest the rice by hand as well. The engine which drives this nation, in this part of the world, is still the human body. Another woman in the lower right is carrying seedlings on her back to be planted.
