Artist Notes
I took this shot of the Brahmin Priests at my friend's home in Chennai, South India.

Homam or Havan in Hinduism is basically the offering of intensive rituals to different GODS and GODDESSES by invoking Agni, the God of Fire.

It is performed by qualified Brahmin priests in one's home or office in order to bring Success, Abundance, Peace, Prosperity in Life, remove blockage in the path of your success, stop getting loss in Business & Profession, bring Financial stability, protection from evil forces, speedy recovery from Illness and better education.

Brahmin (anglisized) is a name used to designate a member of the traditional Hindu societies of India.
Brahmins as a caste were engaged in attaining the highest spiritual knowledge and adhered to different branches of The Holy Scriptures (Vedas) This was described to be a difficult path of discipline of body, mind, and intellect.

The priestly class is expected to practice self-abnegation and play the role of being the custodians of Righteousness. The fee paid to the Brahmin for performance of a prayer rituals was considered as a return for the duties of the priest.

Brahmin sects wear the sacred thread across their shoulders that is a symbol of initiation to the Holy rituals. They also wear caste marks on their foreheads and wear 6 yard white a loin cloth ,a traditional attire.

Here in this picture you see 9 priests getting ready to appease the nine planets by invoking the Lord of Fire. Each has an item such as, fruits , coconuts, flowers, clarified butter, lentils, rice, wooden sticks etc to propitiate different planets. This ritual(shortened version!) lasts for about 4 hours (in today's world)

These gentlemen are actually modern day professionals working as engineers, accountants etc. They keep the traditions alive to some extent keeping the essentials in place.

Enjoy!

Seshadri is an engineer by profession. He holds a degree in electrical engineering and is also a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers in India. He lives in Mumbai, India and is an independent consultant in the marketing of industrial products.

This background might seem entirely unconnected with the world of art, but for decades Seshadri has been wielding the brushes as a hobby. Although he is an entirely self-taught artist ,he has held a few one-man shows to his credit and been part of regional group exhibitions in Bombay, Bangalore, and Delhi in the 70's and 80's. In the new Millennium he has had private shows in New York and San Francisco in the years 2006 and 2008.

Caught up in the rat race, however, he had little time to devote to my canvasses and virtually gave up painting. But the new millennium brought with it a new phase of creativity, and he has again finding himself painting and capturing the evanescent moments of life.
