Artist Notes
I love all things Roman (though there are many other eras I love too). Hadrian's wall is so misunderstood, the way it was built, what it looked like, exactly why it was built, by exactly whom (we know which legions & have names of some individuals). Was it fortification or border control or taxation? How much of our view of the celts as barbarian savages was created by the Roman propaganda machine to make them look worse than they were? Was it battles like Mons Grapis (and the loss of the IX?) that started the legend or were they really that "savage"? Even on this wall I'd STILL feel exposed! How about stories of marauding bands of blood thirsty Celts out for blood on a cold mid winter night? Could you sleep in peace up here? Was that maybe the contrived reason for such a construction project? Maybe we'll never know! Did you know there's a "Hadrian's wall" in north Africa as well to mark the southern boundary? That certainly wasn't defensive! I love the questions and the intelligent debate to answer these questions.
One thing we can say (and you can feel!) the troops from the Med must have been fed up of the cold in winter, the snow, torrential rain, freezing winds; mosquitos & gnats in the Summer!! Being in the middle of nowhere, watching out for sudden attacks, maybe feeling nervous, shivering in the cold, numb fingers on your sword & pelum? (We guess as much from tablets from Vindolanda.) Yet also a sense of it being a presteige posting (outside of the Praetorian guard). Figure that?!
Standing here on the wall is where history collides with reality! Indeed it was reality once but whose. Each victor writes and rewrites and reshapes our history, are our ideas even close?

He has always loved two things, photography and travel. All through secondry school he was to be found in the school darkroom. He started out with a Zenit B (progressed to an EM later) cutting his own film, doing his own developing and priting. Later on he got a taste for travel and now the two hobbies combine wonderfully. The best bit is photography is a hobby where you can always learn! It's a fool who says he's nothing to learn and if a photo of his has helped you, well that's made his day!
Photos are more than just capturing a moment, they capture the mood of a place the feelings it evokes and he hopes his shots convey that. If so, he's happy he's managed to bring a little ray of sunshine to someone else's day.
## As a terminal ill kidney patient with PKD, he would like you to consider that half (50%) of anything paid will go directly to support research into the condition. It will help those who follow. Please bear that in mind when you offer. Thank you
