You'll never guess who did this! I took this shot in Arches National Park a earlier this spring. I shot this on my way back to the motel around 10:00 am. The Park was crowded. The parking lot to the observation point for this monument was full. I found an area that was slightly widened, jumped out and got a landscape shot and a portrait shot as wide as my lens would allow. I know it's tight at the top, but the portrait view cut off too much of the right side of the photo, so I decided to use this one. I was backing up traffic some as it was and didn't have time for a lot of moving around to compose things much better, sorry!

I used mild to moderate HDR in this. I loved HDR at first and then after seeing over 1000 HDR shots, I've started disliking it. I do believe it has a purpose. That is to return some of the dynamic range that our eyes see, but our camera doesn't fully communicate. Many photos that I and probably you have taken are pretty washed out compared to the actual scene. Generally, after I've processed HDR, I'll mask part or most of the original photo back into the composition, to retain realism.

This shot was taken much later in the day than I normally do. The sun and contrast was high, so HDR was needed to reduce the global contrast and to keep from washing out the sky. I did less masking (35%)than I normally do. Some have commented that they too, don't care for HDR. Some times we must go beyond what we don't like, to achieve what we actually see with our eyes.

This was shot with a Canon T3, with Tamron zoom lens @ 18mm, F16, 1/8 sec, ISO 100. There is some wide angle distortion, as I was pretty close in this shot of a huge stone monument. I hope you enjoy the photo! Thanks for looking.

I began my life as an amatuer photographer in 1974, with film. I enjoyed photgraphing wildlife and nature, but worked mostly with portraiture at that time. I began developing in my own darkroom and learned the artistic creation that was possible there, particularly with black & white.

I moved away from my hobby in the 90's as the digital revolution began and although easier to take and store photos, the quality was not there. I've recently had a resurgence in my interest in digital photography because technology is again returning the quality that I so much enjoy.

He is a ranked traditional photographer and is currently at the #76 spot on this years rankings.
