Artist Notes
There are two stories attached to this painting of the baby Proboscis monkey of Sandakan, Saban, Borneo. I worked from my own photograph as my husband took me there to see these endangered primates in wild in the middle of a palm oil plantation at Labuk Bay Sanctuary. They have acres to roam free. It was a sight to behold. They squabble and fight amongst themselves. The male with pinch the baby monkey so mother has to been very wary. The male has a long nose. The longer the nose the more the female likes him. His main thing in life is to breed. He does this at a drop of a hat. One male I saw was eating an apple and a female walks past. Down goes the apple on goes to the sex for 2 mins flat and then back to eating the apple as if nothing has happened. Our private guide gave up trying to talk to me as he keep getting embarrassed my this male's continual actions.
The second story is how this came to be a watercolour. A found a Chinese artist with his own gallery in the back streets of Singapore. He was demonstrating watercolours and I asked if I could stand and watch. He made watercolour look so easy. I had given watercolour up years ago as a bad joke. I thought I can do that. So I came home and this painting was the result.
Watercolour on watercolour paper.
