Stairway to nowhere

Walking through the backlanes and streets of Adelaide I came across the stairway winding its way up between the two buildings. Edited in Picasa I changed it to black and white and thought how much it reminded me of Escher artwork. Yes I know it over-exposed at the top of frame but I wanted to retain the image going to nowhere and not sure how to fix or if fixable with software :)
