Flamborough is a village about 4 miles north of Bridlington in East Yorkshire, where I used to live. I now live further down the coast. The name is thought to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon work "Flaen" meaning arrowhead, to reflect the promontory stretching up to 6 miles into the sea or another possibility is a word meaning the place of flame. It has chalk cliffs up to 400 feet in places, chalk which was laid millions of years ago when dinosaurs roamed around and is one of the most important seabird colonies in Europe, with auks, gannets, gulls, oyster catchers, eider ducks and cormorants. The lighthouse was first established in 1669 and during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries smuggling was very common as there are many smugglers' coves in the cliffs. I used water mixable oils on a canvas block for this. Hope you like it.
