Caterpillar road or Sawfly Larvae

A chapter in the book Bugs and Butterflies

Safety in numbers

Travelling through Victoria we stopped to look at the old railway bridge making our way through the bush track when I saw a lot of wriggling slowly moving caterpillars or sawfly larvae making their way along the trail. Apparently they travel like this so that any predators think they are too big to attact or try eating.

Jairos has been posting some macros of caterpillars and other bugs which reminded me of this photograph in my library. For Jairos :)
