Port Giles Yorke Peninsular

A chapter in the book South Australia

The grain ship in the distance

Port Giles is the newest Port on the Yorke Peninsular, South Australia which was opened in 1970 as a deep water port able to handle bulk grain, and load it onto larger modern ships. The opening of this port led to the closure of many of the smaller ports on Yorke Peninsular which were not deep enough and could only handle steamships and small ketches which meant loading grain in bags rather than the bulk loading. There is no town at Port Giles just the jetty and a lot of large grain storage silos.
