Akbar and Dewi were taken illegally from the wild in Thailand when they were young and kept as pets. They were rescued and donated to the Adelaide Zoo by the Taiping Zoo in Malaysia, arriving here in November 1994. Kept in small cages, they did not develop normally as cubs and often displaying unnatural behaviour such as pacing. This is Akbar the male and he was busy gnawing on the leaf but I was impressed by the bears powerful claws which are matched by their very sharp teeth.
