Kapaleeshwarar temple was built in 7th century CE by the Pallavas. The original Kapaleeshwarar Temple was built where Santhome Church is located currently in Chennai. This original temple was demolished by the Portuguese and the present temple was built in the 16th century by the Vijayanagar Kings and is one of the most important landmarks of the city of Chennai (Madras) in South India..

On April 3,this year the Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple peformed its 'kumbabhishekam' (a religious ceremony which is performed for a newly constructed shrine to make it sacred for worship). The huge temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati.
