Great Blue Heron

Great Blue Heron

I see quite a few egrets in my neck of the woods but I don't get to see the Great Blues very often. This is the largest heron native to North America. They are present in Minnesota from March through October. Most live about 15 years in the wild, though some have been recorded surviving over 24 years. Adults are 38″ to 54″ long, weigh 74 to 88 ounces, and have a wingspan of about 7′. Males are slightly larger than females. This heron had been standing on one leg like they often do, I caught this just as he brought his second leg down. Taken in Brooklyn Center, MN around Palmer Lake.
