Gina Miller and Sally Yates

Friends of the People

This is a tribute to two women who in recent times have sacrificed livelihoods and reputations in the defence of the rule of law. Gina Miller was prominent in the court case that ensured that the triggering of Brexit was debated in parliament and not just imposed as the prime minister wished whilst Sally Yates was the first judge to deem Donald Trump's migrant ban as unconstitutional. The title is a reference to the pro-Brexit Daily Mail coverage of the court case where Gina Miller and the judges were branded 'Enemies of the People'. I also penned the following poem to accompany this. Happy viewing and happy sunday to all!

To act only when it is safe
Or only when less is at stake
Will barely scratch and scarcely chafe
The foe whose back you aim to break.
Not so Ms Miller and Ms Yates
Who laid their reputes on the line
And resigned themselves to their fates
To uphold laws that lay supine
Before hasty autocracy
Masked as dogged democracy.
