LAVATERA Life Cycle
....Life Cycle

I often think this is one of my very finest photos. Not because it is technically better than any of my others nor because it is my favorite flower. What I really like about this image is the fact that in a single frame I was able to capture the entire life cycle ( six distinct stages) of a LAVATERA flower.
The cycle begins w/ the flower encapsulated inside these hairy little burgundy balls. As it begins to open (mid-lower frame) you start to see how amazingly intricate the flower is. As it blossoms and the petals mature they actually change color.....starting out almost red (upper-mid frame) but getting lighter and lighter w/ age- you can see the difference in color of the two blossoms at the left. As the little pod reaches complete maturity it drops it's petals and what remains is the seed pod it started as- now open as a five point star. The one at the lower right side still has a single shriveled petal stuck to it.
So pictured here in a single frame is the life cycle of a LAVATERA flower at my place. This variety grows on a hedge-like plant. It is HUGE....stretching at least 25' long and growing a good 6-8' high. It has literally thousands of these flowers (about 2"+ at maturity) and blossoms from mid summer through until the first heavy frost.
