Cardinals get their name from the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church, who wear distinctive red robes and caps. The female cardinal doesn't have the bright red colors of the male but she does have the black mask and some light red colors on her crest, wings and tail. The Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven states in the USA.
