Takeoffs and Landings - Photo (a) Contest Entry
Watching shore birds on the FL Gulf coast is always entertaining. These are called Black skimmers and huddle in close nit groups on the beach. Seems like every once in awhile they get antsy and have to change positions. They all seem to bolt at the same time and then settle down just a few feet away from where they were. A very chaotic scene evolves, but one that is fun to watch. This is the only bird that has a longer lower beak than the upper beak. It is used to scoop food from the surface of the water while flying, skimming as they say.
