Art in the way of a Boat Contest Entry
I painted this in oil on canvas a couple of years ago. This forms a part of the series I painted on the holy city of Banaras.
Banares, now called Varanasi, is a city on the banks of the Ganges in the Uttar Pradesh state of North India.A major religious hub in India, it is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism.

Varanasi grew as an important industrial centre, famous for its muslin and silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works, and sculpture. Buddha is believed to have founded Buddhism here around 528 BC when he gave his first sermon.

Hindus believe that they have three mothers- the mother who has given them birth, Mother India and Mother Ganga.(Ganges) The River Ganga (Ganges) is as important as blood in the human body to Varanasi and Hindus living all over the world. The river is believed to have quality of washing off ones sin and providing them liberation just by taking a bath in it. Hindus from all over the world come to Varanasi to take a holy dip in the river.

Watching people coming down the river in early morning, taking bath in the Mother Ganges and performing rituals is always a unique experience. Groovy Tours organizes different boat rides to different places depending on our client?s request.

What I have shown here is a part of the large rive bank of the river Ganges.
Enjoy!
