This is Amanda, one of five Sumatran Orangutans at the Como Zoo in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is 41 years old and weighs 115 pounds. Amanda is people watching from a 20 foot tower built for them to climb and lounge and watch people.
Orangutans are the most arboreal of the great apes and spend most of their time in trees. They are among the most intelligent primates. They use a variety of sophisticated tools and construct elaborate sleeping nests from branches and foliage. Orangutans are listed as Critically Endangered. A number of organizations are working for the rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction of orangutans.
Orangutans and humans share 97% of the same genetic makeup.
