My gardens get ready to kick it into high gear about this time of the season so had a difficult time trying to decide what flower to present today but settled on this very interesting little AQUILIGIA. Technically a perennial, I've found it won't survive the harsh winters at my place so every few years I start several varieties in my home in March and transplant them into different beds. I was surprised at how quickly this one (var.- 'Magpie') blossomed.
The name AQUILIGIA comes from the Latin word for 'eagle' b/c the long spurs at the back of the flower supposedly resemble an eagle's talons while it's common name 'Columbine' comes from the Latin word 'columba' meaning dove-like. Either way this flower is known for its very distinctive spurred flowers and with a wide choice of hybrid varieties available it now comes in every color imaginable from pastels to darker shades as well as bi-colored blossoms as seen here.
I always note when one of my flowers is edible....and this flower is VERY popular w/ Hummingbirds and Bees for it's nectar loaded spurs. In my research over the years, however, I have found it said that it is very sweet and edible (Native Americans used it medicinally) while others suggest that it is highly toxic (w/ crushed seeds being an effective means of killing lice) ....hmmmnnn All I know for SURE is that it is one of the most intricate, interesting flowers blossoming in my gardens right now. Took this photo mid-day yesterday under a slightly over-cast sky.
