A ballet of Surprise Lilies in Spotlight

Dancing Naked Ladies

by nature rules

A Photo Full of Flowers Contest Entry
When my parents passed we decided to take on the renovation of their home and live in it instead of selling it. One of the very most rewarding parts of this property is the remaining flowers and trees that Mom and Dad planted 45+ years ago. These pink Surprise lilies were my mom's favorite. Although she called them naked ladies. For those of you who do not know them, they are on very tall, slender stems with no leaves....as their foliage is some of the first to break through the ground in the early spring...with no flowers at that time. It then dies back and leaves nothing to show for itself..like daffodil leaves...until weeks later when these gorgeous flowers appear out of the bare dirt. They have the most glorious colors of blue, lavender, pinks, whites and a bit of yellow. They move freely with the slightest breeze so they always appear to be ladies dancing...most always in the deepest shade they can find. This patch..next to an ancient tree stump... happened to receive some fertilizer this year and an entire dance troupe popped up to form their ballet. And they truly are a sight to behold. I chose to show a crop of the flower heads more that the entire stem. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Thank for for viewing.
