Hemera is the mythical Greek goddess of the sky, or air. Where ever she goes the morning sky rises and as she traverses the havens the light of the sky overtakes the dark of the night. There are paintings and illustrations of her doing her godly duty. I decided to do a simple portrait of her with that all knowing and experienced expression of confidence only a goddess could possess. I never do a painting with a preconceived conclusion about what the finished painting will look like. I prefer to make decisions while in process, or what I call having a "conversation" with the painting. However, there were two baseline thoughts I wanted to represent. I did want the illusion that the painting was looking back at the viewer regardless of where the viewer was standing or sitting so I used the old masters technique to achieve this. I also wanted the background to kind of represent the element that the goddess controlled. This was done with a loose color no shape approach. There are four paintings in this collection to represent earth, air, fire and water. Hemera is the goddess of air, or the sky.

Mixed Media: None | I had a thought to paint the Greek mythical goddesses of earth, air, fire and water. Since almost all Greek goddesses are beautiful I decided on painting portraits of beautiful women based against a highlighted color background I felt representative of the element they controlled. Hemera is the goddess of the sky or air. I first did the drawing on a 14 by 18 inch canvas then oil painted the portrait. I never have a preconceived idea of the final result.
