This citadel (fort) has a ton of history. It was first started in 1539 by the Spaniards to guard San Juan bay, San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1898 to 1961 the US military ran the fort. In 1961 it was turned over to the US Park Service. In 1983, the citadel was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. Today it is the leading tourist attraction on the Island. We happened to be there on a beautiful clear and windy day. The bay was dramatic with high and white waves crashing on shore.
