The Color Green - Art Contest Entry
While in Hawaii to see the total eclipse of the sun, my family, some friends and I visited the tourist sites on the big island. It was a great vacation that my kids still remember. This painting is an abstract expression of walking through Thurston Tube. I decided to do it in an abstract manner to see if I could reconstruct the emotional impact felt while being in the tube and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It is painted with a pallet knife making the sharp edges of rock and light contained within the ever downward knife movement to display the dripping greenery in the tunnel. I felt the different treatments of knife stroke would give the visual effects I wanted to display the emotions of confinement and relieve.
Post Type: Traditional Art
Mixed Media: None | This painting was done as a self-imposed problem in creating textures with a pallet knife to display forms that would give a feeling of confinement and sudden relief by exchanges between dark and light colors. A memory of walking through the Thurston Tube in Hawaii was the impetus for this painting. I, while a little uncomfortable about being underground walking through an old lava tube, enjoyed the experience of seeing something I had never seen before. When I saw the light at the end of the tunnel I had a heart jump of joy. Over the years I often wondered if I could paint this event. This painting is that effort.
