Unusual Pet Contest Contest Entry
Coatis are species in the Raccoon family native in South-Western North America, Central and South America. They are common pets in their native areas.
The animal in the photo is an about 2 month old White-nosed coati [Nasua narica] also known as Coati-Mundi. It was fond on a road beside its dead mother and sibling which were killed in a car accident. It apparently fells safe with its owner, is friendly with people and other animals, curious about everything and very nosy. In the photo it is climbing a palm tree in front of my friends beach house.
Adults of the species measure 13-27 inches [33-69 cm] from the head to the base of their tail. The tail often is longer than the entire body. The common name refers to the white markings around their snouts, eyes and ears. In the wild they get about 8 years old, but could reach an age of 16 years in captivity.
