Civil War cannon fired Top of the Rock

Sunset at Top of the Rock

by stringbean

Top of the Rock, Big Cedar Lodge, Ridgedale, Missouri Signature Sunset Ceremony. Celebrating the stunning views of sunset at Top of the Rock. Order a signature cannonball drink and turn your attention to the Chapel of the Ozarks. You will hear bagpipe music and witness the firing of an authentic Civil War cannon.

The cannon is a replica of a Wizard Civil War cannon that fired a 12-pound cannonball. The cannon actually is an extension of the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum at Top of the Rock, which features a collection of Civil War artifacts. The cannon is placed near the stone chapel and points out at Table Rock Lake, but rest assured no cannonballs are fired and no lives are lost. But there is a flash-and-bang! Depending on the night, men and women play the bagpipes and fire the cannon the ceremony happens nightly from mid-March through November 1. It dates to Top of the Rock's opening. The starting time changes because it happens at sunset.

It is a military tradition to fire a gun at sunset when the flag is lowered. The bagpipe interlude is a nod to Scotland, birthplace of golf. Top of the Rock is home to a 9-hole golf course. Guests can see the events from Osage Restaurant Buffalo Bar and the End of the Trail All-American Wine Cellar patio.

Thanks for viewing...the firing of the cannon this night was exactly as the sun went down in the horizon.
