Artist Notes
THIS IS NOT A PHOTOGRAPH. This is a digital painting that has been painted totally in Photoshop. It shows a small family lobster business where the day has ended, nightime is closing in. According to the old sailor's tale, seeing red skies at night brings the promise of another good day of fishing the next morning. The small family lobster businesses are slowly going away, being swept aside as the cost and competition determines their fate. This small fishing village will become just a memory of how it used to be, when families relied on the bounties of the sea, braving the elements, often dying in an effort to bring in the catch that will sustain them for another season.
The full size of this painting is 40x50 inches. It required over 90 hours to complete and is one in a series that I am working on. I am painting a third one now that still has 50 to 60 hours of work remaining. I did use a reference photo for parts of this image but there is no longer a comparision to those photos. These are tedious and complex images to paint. Each element is structured independently, merged to their root element as the parts layers are completed. Once the overall element is completed for shape and color I then add features that make them convincing...such as texture, peeling paint, aging and other tiny, but important, details. Reviewers have often regarded my works as photographs and reviewed them under that pretense. I haven't decided if I am offended by that or should feel complimented. Russ

The PixelArtisan, (Russ), is a digital artist with a strong passion for realism. His paintings often include dramatic skies, articulate lighting and are always highly detailed. All of his digital works are created exclusively with Photoshop. Each painting generally requires between 50 and 100 hours to complete and are up to 96 inches wide or high. There are never any imported images, scans or other software used in his paintings. Some paintings are from cherished memories, some are his portrayal of specific locations while others are totally imaginary. For the more complex realism paintings he may use a reference photo for specific elements but never copies or duplicates the photo. He always adds his own touches to make each element unique. Russ has developed a seminar for digital fine art that he presents to art societies and galleries. He has his works on display at several regional galleries, at malls and other commercial locations. Russ was recently awarded an Honorable Mention by
