Artist Notes
This painting is based on my experience in ICU (intensive care unit).

Some time ago, I was committed to the ICU by an asthma induced heart attack, inflicted by a kitchen fire. I could have easily died then, but I am still here, and I am grateful to be alive. I made a painting based on my emotional turmoil I experienced during my stay in ICU. I had posted a similar sketch once, and my kind friends were very compassionate, but this time, I want you to be strictly objective in reviewing this work.

Each component in this painting has very specific meaning and symbolism. I know some reviewers do not want to be told, but this is so personal, and without explanation, I am afraid that true meaning and symbolism of the painting is going to be lost. If you still refuse for the explanation, please skip below:

The face at the bottom is myself. I described honestly whatever condition I was in. When I was committed to the ICU, one of my pupils was small and other was so large. I had a tube placed through my mouth and down my throat, and I recall it as a quite painful experience. There were always beautiful flowers from my close friends and family, and those eyes in the flowers symbolize their hope and wish for my quick recovery. The root of the flowers, however, grows deep inside me, passes me, and start to expand its roots in the hospital ground, which bounds me to the hospital forever. This symbolizes my fear of inability to fully recovery. There were two other members, which were victims of the fire; my son and my cat, whom you see to my left and above me. The fire was actually caused by my son, and his mental turmoil at the time was probably more than mine. My husband was out of town at the time.

Above my head, there is an entrance to another world. As I have described already in 'The Final Journey', a dragon is my choice of a transportation for the journey. You see also a rabbit carrying a clock, which shows the time of fire accident. Please also observe the fire surrounds him. After this point (the entrance), there is no time. I can see the bright light through the entrance and I see there are many red dragonflies flying my direction. In Japan, people believe that red dragonfly carries a soul from another world, and those souls are ones I love dearly but now exist only in another dimension, and they are waiting for reunion.

On the left side, I am sitting and looking at my shell (marionette). Even if I have the ability to go back to my shell, my heart is torn to two - go or stay. I chose sea as a background; I was raised by the sea and it is always my home; it is my origin.

On the right side, there are trees I often saw from my hospital room. One big one was especially spooky at night. As they swung with wind, I saw unrested souls amongst it. The front tree was with color and gave me a little bit of comfort.

We say that when people die, their whole life passes before their eyes. From left to right around my head, there were other major events of my lifetime. I was born, went to school, got married and have a kid. I remembered I had a dark school period, and was always looking for my identity. I was good at basketball.

At the top of the ICU building, there is always a race between life and death, hope and sorrow, rescuer (as hospital crews) and takers (messengers of death).

This painting is dedicated to my son who had always been encouraging me to finish this.

This has become a rather long description. I really appreciate, my friends, your patient in reading such long description as such as this.

Biography

I am a geomatics / software engineer and always struggling to find a time for the artworks between my busy schedules. The art is my lifetime hobby and dream, but had not been quite persistent. In 2005, I had a near-death experience, but I somehow had pulled out of it. The incident could be fortunate, in a way, as my whole perspective toward life has somehow changed. I cannot stop feeling that I am still here for some reason, and it is my destiny to find it. As I am sure, at least, the art has been my passion throughout my life, I came to conclusion that I am left here to pursue my own creation, and doing so actively and diligently since.

I am an extremely solitude person. I have believed that I try to communicate my opinion and emotion with the others though my artworks, but recently, I have noticed that it may not be a case. I do my artworks mainly to meet myself, and the art beco ...
