Initial Impact: This would be classified right up close and personal. Lighting: not to bad. Aim to Maim presentation. Color harmony: good. Center of interest: the face. Cropping: very tight.
Focus: sharp. Action require: None. Story telling is in the Title and Artist's notes.
Comments: Good concept.

first, i like cats. you have nice focus on his eyes, and his eyes are focused on that dog. glaring expression on his face. initial impact is good.

i think the fur is just a little dark, could up the brightness, and perhaps the saturation could come up very slightly.

overall, a technically good though somewhat common kitty photo in my opinion. you did a good job of staying still to prevent blur hand held at 1/60 on a 300mm zoom without a flash.

NOTE:
forgive me, but i want to say this side note... kitty shots are fairly common and simple. with your experience, talent, and many photos posted here, i believe this shot is cute, but maybe below your skill level.

i see this photo was voted all time best and received at least 145 flattering, 5-star reviews... congrats. but, we may have more cat lovers who see emotionally "cute", and fewer photographers who will give you a constructive, critical assessment from your peers (the reason for reviews).

believe me, it would be much quicker, easier, and less stressful to just give out 5 stars and complements to everyone automatically, rack up points and money, and not take the time and effort to give a useful review. i say we all deserve more from each other here, when possible.

as i am new to this process, i may be misguided, but i think if we disagree, we should be able to say so here. unlike other photography or social websites, this one actually asks for it.

LowRider, i like your work and you deserve respect. i just wanted to explain this bigger FAR issue, as well as my personal thoughts behind rating this photo four stars. sorry, i just got carried away. your thoughts?

My thoughts---I think this is probably the best review I have ever received in my time of membership on FAR--(since 2004)!

As far as lightening the fur--this was mentioned by another artist and my thoughts are---I needed to bounce light high left, (left--looking at the photo)--your thoughts?

I absolutely agree about the abundance of 5 star reviews offering no substance. This review you have offered me is the review I have been waiting for a very long time and I thank you grandly!!

Thank you for this exceptional review, I greatly appreciate your time and do not think you got carried away---but if you did--Thank you!!

i was hoping you would read my review without feeling like it was an attack. each person takes criticism differently. i try to find issues in every picture that i think could be better, mention it to the artist in a non-threatening way, give the reason, and maybe a suggestion for how to fix or avoid it. im pretty good at finding details, but not so much with the artistic merit, that is harder to judge, so i will leave those comments to others.

of course i could save time and space if i didn't have to 'walk on eggshells' to be polite and kind, but when i am direct, i come across as... mean, petty, aggressive, rude, etc. i think u can tell im not like that, but first impressions are sometimes tense.

    about lightening the fur...
not sure what you mean by 'bounce'. do u mean bounce the flash off the ceiling? i do see that it is a little darker at both upper corners, but i was referring to the entire photo. it could be my (or your) screen that is off. if my monitor is true, i think you only need to use the brightness on the whole photo just a little, not too much. just watch the whitest areas for wash-out.
if this brightness adjustment washes the colors, bump up the saturation to your taste.

thanks again for your nomination. that's cool.

Quite the impressive photo, Deb! For some reason I see a ton of cat photos where detail is lost throughout the fur, but that is not at all the case here.. I love how each hair can be picked out from the rest. Extremely appropriate exposure and good timing.. the cat seems to be expressing emotion here. Your DoF is ideal, extending from the nose to the forehead. Nicely done, great model for all the pet photographers!

Very nice close up of the cat. Great initial impact. Love the green clear eyes. The image is well focused and your use of light is good. Nice texture in the fur. All together a very pleasant photo to look at. Well balanced and nicely composed.

I like the crop, nice and close, but retains a feel of the texture of her fur. The slight pink of her nose, and the corners of her eyes make this a far better than average 'cat" shot. Donkeyoatey

La mirada expresa mucho, el color blanco resalta los ojos, aunque la imagen no es del todo simetrica; expresa que muchas veces es lo más importante en la fotografía. Me gustó.

The eyes are so expressive. They tell the story along with the artists notes. Good sharp focus on details. Nice close up shot and cropping. Good use of available light without 'redeye' Colors good.
