What an eye-catching, memory-evoking, beautiful picture. And the story that goes with it is lovely. Your Granddad sounds like a pretty cool guy...I wonder how this picture would have looked with a wee bit more 'stuff' around it? I mean, taken a little further back, allowing a bit of landscape to be seen?

This is a very interesting photograph. It speaks volumes. The house is solid and well grounded. The elements surrounding it are simple but add so much.

I know this is more meaningful for you. Than just being out and taking a photo of an abandoned house somewhere.
The lighting is good. The focus is good. You did crop off a tiny piece of the left of the roof. And the wooden fence in the front is barely visible. The framing with the tree on the right is good. The only "style" and eye catcher is maybe the front door and the worn window frame.
It may not be one that folks jump to review, but your grandpa should be honored by your story and your accomplishment just from what we've all seen on this site. :)
