This is another good close crop. I can see your image in his glasses as you are shooting the photo. Beware, objects in the mirror are closer than they appear, LOL. Very nice picture, and best wishes for your contest entry!!

Thanks Mike, I appreciate your kind and generous review very much.
I hope that isn't me what you see in the reflection. The reflection in the left lower corner is a part of a car tail light. I'm in the right side of the glasses but I taught not visible. Am I? Just checked the original where the reflection seams unrecognizable to me.

Hi Cleo, technically this is an awesome shot. Visually his features are so sharp and well focused. Very good detail with the beard. If i look carefully i can see a bit of your reflection. Very good DOF. The only minor thing i'd suggest is seeing the whole chin would benefit this. Well done.

Thanks Lynseey, I appreciate your friendly and generous review very much.
I have to admit that the chin is cut off in purpose. I wanted no attention for the goatee but for the face and the reflection showing what he is looking at.
I'm not in in the reflection there are Palapas, RV's, cars and a carrlight in the left corner. Maybe the reflection isn't that clear and unmisstakable as I tought.

In many ways this is tech. a very good shot. Your subject is crisp in focus, the lighting is great as is your DOF. I find that it is just too tight on the subject.

thank you for your kind review. I have to admit that the 'tightness' is intentional.

I thought it was but for me it does not work. The differences in us is what makes the world go a round :)
reply by the author on 05-Jan-2009
That's right. Were would we be if we wouldn't see things different. Controversy is what brings us forward.
I appreciate your honesty. I would always appreciate a 1 Star with a honest critique more than a 6 Star as a shoulder pet. These stars reminding me to much of this Bee's they used to give in school to a 'good' kid.
reply by rbeyes on 05-Jan-2009
Yeah I totally agree. I have people give me 6's for reasons that make no sense to me and then I have people give me 3's because the main subject isn't centered. Ya just have to go with the flow :)

    Agreed :)

In all technical aspects, this is an outstanding photograph. Your focus is incredibly sharp, as each hair seems to stand out incredibly well. The nose, ear, and shades are also perfectly crisp, no fuzziness or graininess of any kind. Excellent light management yields good contrast between the grays.

I believe that the presentation as a whole, however, leaves a little bit to be desired. For one thing, I don't like how the top of his head and the bottom of his beard are cut off, and I think you may have fared better with vertical orientation. Secondly, while this is a technically beautiful shot, it's not that engaging... what's your subject doing? What's he thinking? What's his lifestyle? The inclusion of sunglasses hides the emotions he's feeling, I believe.

The picture as a whole is nearly flawless, I just wanted to point out some things to think about when taking portraits. Thanks very much for sharing this.

Thank you so much for your honest and thorough review.
I have to admit that all things you criticised are intentional as the horizontal and tight framing. One reason is to bring these sunglasses you dislike to attention.
I have shots of him without the glasses but this shot tells more about him and his lifestyle even what he is doing and thinking at this time as his short-sight eyes without glasses could. It's all in the reflection. Can you see it now?
reply by Flight_of_Raven on 07-Jan-2009
I can! Very good idea, actually, sorry I criticized it. I'm glad to see how intentional you were in your work; it's the sign of a good artist. Nice use of the shades. Thanks for clarifying.

Very sharp and detailed. Nice composition. The background is slightly distracting but doesn't take away the impact of the photo.

You need to improve in the areas which show 0's.

Thank you.

Thank you so very much for your detailed and generous review.
Maybe you are right that the background is distracting. I just looked a long time at the photo. It doesn't occurred distracting to me but of curse that could be wrong. It is always harder to see mistakes in out own work. The background is nature given. It is not a set up portrait. I planned it but Jim didn't know. I didn't wan't any posing. I prefer to wait for the right moment, I could change the background but that would mine to introduce Mixed Media what I try to avoid on a contest entry.

You have made a portrait with strong initial impact. The expression on your friend Jim shows what seems to be a very interesting personality. The detail is very good, even to the reflection in the sun glasses.
