A lovely photo, good eye contact, good focus, colour and light. This sparrow looks good, alot of people don't like the sparrow, for it has a nic name of the "death bird" or something similar, can't remember it just now. For it is said, if someone dies at home, they will see sparrows flying around in the trees outside the place. I myself think they are a great little bird, and you have done a lovely job, well done.

Amazing job of capturing such a small bird..details like the food in his beak and the layers of his feathers...the blurred background brings the bird into sharper focus..nicely done!

You have done an excellent job with the focus and the light and angle for this shot. Your dof is perfect and the crop is nice and tight. Good catchlight in the eye also.

Preface:
Some of my reviews may be a bit repetitious. Have to use a file to reduce typing, due to frostbite in Korea, have some disability in my right hand. But, for each review, I modify it heavily to fit the piece that I choose to review. If Ive chosen yours, its because it jumped out and grabbed my attention.

Technical - 5
Excellent example of Photo of a bird.
Well balanced, colors which fit well together, and an interesting pattern, with good detail in blacks, mid-tones, highlights. Feel it is perfectly cropped or framed.

Using a zone scale on my computer, while reviewing your piece.
It delineates ten specific zones of gray or contrast, from Black w/o details -zone 0-
To White like the glare of light on snow or virtually no detail. Why is this important?
Because, it is the range of blacks, grays, and whites, that control colors.

Your image is full scale, on my calibrated monitor.
It really does not need changes, the zones it contains, are exactly correct for the image. Few achieve that.

The color range in browns excellent.

Impact - 5 Powerful subject.
This creates impact. Excellent specific points of interest, in the eye, bill, feathers in lower left.
The piece is dramatic, has impact, due to having smooth transitions of color, and distinct or sharp lines, which delineates elements of the piece. It looks great with the black border of FanArt. You might consider it as a note card, with a black border.

Lighting - 5
Appropriate, natural appearing lighting of an interesting subject...

Composition - 5
Love it when people "compose for maximum impact."
People can learn a lot, in tutorials on You-Tube or other sites, wish more of them did. Even at 80+, with 74 years experience in photography and art, am still studying and learn something every day, about photography, painting, oils, and acrylics. Still learning to show what I feel.

In composition, we want to choose a powerful interest point, then put it into the position with most impact. You have done that.

Creativity: 5
Many times we can learn playing with our images, to see what happens as we use our imagination. It can give us other ideas of what we may create, in the future. Sometimes make 10 to 25 sketches or photos, to develop an expression of my feelings about a person, place or event.

Creativity is more than capturing an image.
Ansel Adams, my mentor as a photographer said, "12 images, is a good years work."
When we Aim for quality, we can achieve it, with practice.
You have done it.

With experience, we can reach a point where we develop our own style. I feel, you have done this.
My desire is to help you produce something better, each time, want to see more of your work! Some "Technical" rules, were made to be broken, when breaking them is creative or expresses your feelings. But, just breaking them, does not work unless it improves the piece of art.

Some reviewers, feel they must "go by the rules." So what they say may be "inappropriate," for some Artists." Take that into consideration when reading reviews, even mine. Everyone's experience is different.

Only if, _we_feel_ it is not quite right, should we change it.... Including the medium we use. For decades labored over sculptures with various material's. Finally my wife convinced me to try using her paint. My first effort, blew her mind, she thought it better than anything she had done, after 47 years of painting. (I did not agree, to me it was not better, just different) It was like taking a Quantum Leap, into the Future. Never went back to sculpture again. But, still do not paint to sell. We paint, only to please ourselves. If others like it, that is just a bonus. We would rather give our work away to someone who appreciates it, than sell it to someone who does not. Paint only to please yourself, and you will continue improving. If you feel you must paint what or how others want to sell, it can discourage you.

Story -

Art communicates something you feel,
You expressed feelings in this, I got it, it is a success... Images are worth thousands of words. The best require no words to describe, not even a Title. If a item needs a lot of words to describe it, then it may not be what the artist feels.

Art is a means of showing others what we see or feel and think. IF we really don't have strong feelings about a piece, we found its best not to even finish it, for it is almost never a better piece. We always do something we have strong feelings about. Use experiences in our life, preferably those with strong emotions, good or bad, that inspire you. Think about what you could put on canvas or paper to illustrate those emotions or even physical feelings and then with time you become even better at expressing your feelings.

When your work does this, a Story has been told.

Important Photo Technical info :
Calibrated Monitors make it easier to show viewers Art the way we see it. Even the best of Artwork, will look different than we intended, if created on un-calibrated Monitors. They do not come that way. Pro's. Spend $300 - 600 or more for a device to calibrate them.

What is Gamma, and why do I care? Monitors, can be reasonably calibrated, with Adobe Gamma, which is free. What looks good on your monitor, if not calibrated, will not look as good on the viewers.

It means negative comments in reviews about problems you do not see on your monitor.
Output brightness of monitors are not linear.
For example when displaying a gray square, with a color half way between white and black, the result will -not- be half as bright as a full white. So creations can look flat.

This effect doesn't just apply to brightness of grays, but to the shade of all colors, it is the grays that create shading, mixed with the color. So if a monitor is not calibrated, there is no way you can control how it will appear to the viewer. It can can completely change the viewed image, on another's computer.

Gamma correction is a factor by which software can correct for this non-linearity, that results in a correctly displayed image on the Internet, if saved with sRGB.
For more info: http://www.cgsd.com/papers/gamma.html

When some tell you, colors are off, with a calibrated monitor, you know they look like you want them to look. They also may just not have a calibrated monitor.

Artists use colors which express what they "feel" about the image. Not just "technically correct" according to some standard. If we change colors or make them the way we want, it says what we want to communicate. If someone just does not "get it" that is their problem.

Firefox may be the only calibrated Browser. When we create, and the viewer uses Firefox on a calibrated monitor, it looks like our original. So I use Firefox...
If they don't, then recommend it... making sure they get the add-on that manages color.

Thank you so much. I have not had such a review. I appreciate what you have said. I will keep up with this information. You have been very generous with your advise. I understand that we all keep learning. Photography is a lot more than a hobby to me. I am more than willing to learn more. I will take peoples advise & use what I can from it. I don't always agree, but I do listen and try to understand. If it makes sence to me I usually take it as something I can use. Because this is a contest entry I can not give you my name. But I will keep up with you. Thank you again for taking the time to tell me all this.
