    Thank you very much.
Nice to hear what you like so I'm not feeling lonely. It is impossible to be an artist and photographer in southern Mexico and not being influenced by Diego Rivera and Freida Kahlo. They are Icons here. Beloved and abused at the same. You won't believe how many bad replica and misused images are sold at the tourist trait.

I have seen some! Bad reproductions are just that, an insult and BAD! thanks for the great note! Donkeyoatey

Nice idea and good balance is shown here. However the focusing is a little off and this detracts on the viewing front. You are of course, welcome to disagree. Robin

I like the storytelling of Catrina. The close up shot of the subject is nice and the lighting is good.

i am not sure what to say about this one. i like it.. but at the same i dont. not because it is a bad shot.. it just freaks me out a little. but then that is what makes it a great shot. Thank you for your kind review. I think one has to be familiar with the different traditions and the very different view of death itself in Latin America to understand the meaning of the Calacas [skeletons] including La Catrina. It is not easy to understand their place in Mexican culture and the celebrations of the Day of the Death. I tried to give a introduction in my comments.

Thank you very, very much for your review and the kind wishes. This is my own Catrina. A Mayan friend of us had made the body some time back from papermache. I have dressed her myself.
The photo is very controvers. It seems to be on of these were people emphatically like or dislike the subject with nothing between.

very interesting story behind the picture, Only real criticism would be the lighting is bright but i am guessing under the conditions that was the only way to get the shot. I am happy you shared it because i didn't know about the story behind the catrina .

Thank you for you kind review. I have to admit that I have lighted it that harsh with the shadow eating some away at the left in purpose. I even used artificial light against my usual style to emphasize the juxtaposition of the battered, almost white scull and the elegance in companionship with the contemporary tradition of the calacas in Mexican art and culture and in the celebrations of the Day of the Death.

Excellent entry for this contest. Great artist notes...but with one "literal" translation addition.. La Noche de Brujas literally translated means the The Night of Whores :) LOL! At any rate...she fits the bill :) Great posting.

Thank you very much for your encouraging review and your translation. It translates in European Spanish to whores. I checked my Dictionaries. Only a older Bantam edition [1987] provides only this translation. My Larousse [2004] has only the witch translation. It's the point of view I think. If you ask the native people here the translate with witch. At the Yucatan almost nothing translates literally. But it isn't so far from each other as it seems since the Ixtabay, the famous and most beautiful looking witch of the Mayans is said to have been a 'bad woman' as ahuman before she got eternity as a witch. Also to be a whore and/or a witch is a more less respectable occupation at the Yucatan it just accounts on how and were the work is done.

What a horror. A bit out of focus

I have looked at:
Initial impact
Story telling ability
Light and shade
Color
Texture
Technique
Composition
Focal point
Framing
Originality
All worth 4.5 stars.

Thank you for your kind review. I have to admit that the strange lighting and the bit out of focus is intentional. The focus is not on the skull. It is on two points; the hat and the jewelry in order to emphatize the juxtaposition of elegance and the almost white battered scull in relation the contemporary nature of the figurine in Mexican art and culture.
