Willie is on his tip toes in this photo! Very nice work here on your part and he looks real good. I like the reflection in the water and it does add to the photo.

I wish I had a 6 to give you.

This is a great photograph.

I like the artists notes as a way to set the tone of the photo...but the picture really carries the story without the need for the notes.

Great composition, color, lighting (especially the light on the face), DOF, etc.

Very nice job

A great capture - a nice action shot. Unusual to see a heron about to break into flight. Nice colours and makings on the bird. I can't decide though whether the contrasting light in the water adds to your picture, or distracts from your subject. Overall very nice though.

totally understand Willie. I was just thinking out loud really about tweaking the finished product - but its doing pretty well, so why worry! Viv

This is a great shot. Well done to get it just before it is flying away. The light is lovely in this image. Easy to see that this is the result of the early morning trip. I had a kind of AHA experience reading your notes about focusing on the eye. I will definitely remember that if I get a chance to photograph a bird. This image is nicely composed with good balance and DOFF.

Excellent capture of this heron at a critical "take-off" moment. Good composition and nice light. Focus is fine and it's surprisingly free of noise, given the high iso and downsizing.
Only yesterday, I watched a grey heron (our Britosh equivalent to your blue) catch a fish in a shallow estuary, leave it flapping on the bank for a few seconds, only for it to be stolen by a seagull! Never seen a heron look indignant before and I was cursing as I didn't have the camera with me!

Thank you so very much! I did have some noise but was able to hide it but in some other shots it was so bad I could not use them. I need the fast shutter speed to stop action, but if the light is low you get noise. Got any suggestions?

You already seemed to have handled the problem very well - only the optics on top-end (ie really expensive) SLRs seem capable of handling high iso with minimal noise.
