Your patience paid off. The only thing that might improve it is to actually see the eye - ok, there is a black slit. This photo might be good converted to B & W to show more variation in tone. After all there is little contrast in color here - you don't really need the color.

The fact that you got him with his nostrils peek out is a lucky break for sure.
