This shot is very good and certainly deserving of a contest win! The composition is very good with the heron looking into the open part of the frame, the contrast between bird and fall color reflection is rather striking, focus is very strong on the bird, exposure works as nothing has been lost to highlight or shadow, shutter speed and aperture are appropriate for the scene (I like that the background is blurred but not TOO blurred).
However, there are some issues with this photo that I have picked out, though none of them seem very serious to me:
1) The image overall comes off as too dark.. I believe the contrast I mentioned would be even stronger if the image were lightened, thus generating more impact. (You have some great colors in the background, bring them to life!) Of course, if you brightened the background, you'd have to brighten the heron also!
2) There appears to be some grain in the water, reducing it will improve the view though it's hardly noticeable.
3) I think the reflection is hugging the edge too tightly and this throws off balance for me.. either crop it out or zoom out a little more to let it breathe more.
