Mmm Mmm Mmmm. I think you captured this difficult subject very well. The feeling of speed and power is conveyed well. I'm far from expert and may well be in error, but it appears to me that the shadow on the horse seems to indicate light coming from the left lower quarter, while the shadow on the grass would indicate the sun in the top right quarter. I gotta tell you, while I was looking at this, my Husband walked by, did a double take and said "Oh Wow! Is that a painting, or a photograph?"

This is just beautiful!

The horse is very realistic and I think you captured the sense of motion perfectly.

The background, lighting and shadows are also just right to complement the horse.

Very nice work!

The coloring is natural which is a great setting for this image. I love the spotted horse because it's different. I like how the only thing that is sharp other than the horse is the grass under its hooves. It has a very dream like quality to it. Nice job.

I thought this was a photo in the wrong catagory. I hope you feel this is a compliment because it is meant as one. I went to the Kentucky Horse Park recently and this is one of the types of horses I saw. I thought he was beautiful. You have done this art justice.

Stunning painting Gary and the colours are amazing! You captured the straight on movement of the horse amazingly well! The muted b.g. gives the horse the sense of movement and you nailed that as well! Fantastic shadows and perfect lighting! By now you probably figured I love the painting! Outstanding job!B.g. is perfect as well!

Thank you for such a detailed review, and such a high rating. It was a challenge to do the horse and I needed to study this horse first with a drawing (see my portfolio for the drawing) I have heard of many artists doing studies before the 'final one' in completed and now i know why. It adds to the knowledge basde which adds to the quality of the end product. I love this horse as well, and think it is my best to-date (although my arctic wolf is a close 2nd). Have a Happy New Year.

A stunning work of art and feel this one should have won the artist of the month! Hard to paint a horse almost head on and with the legs raised and running even more so! You have my utmost respect for getting the perspectives perfect! Just truly sorry and dissapointed you did not win! I suppose the members did not look at the structure and details that went into this work of art Gary! A real shame! Keep up the amazing work!

Thank you so mych for these comments. I feel this is my best piece for all the reasons you state. The selection of an appaloosa as my horse of choice introduced the difficulty of the spots, the 3/4 angle brought in the challenge of structure, the illusion of movement with a blurred background and anchoring him to the ground in the step, with focus and sharp edges where they needed to be was worked out first in the drawing, and brought into the painting.
Your work inspires me as well, keep it up :-)
    Gary

#1 Ranked Mixed Media Photographer!

I think the artist was right. I have also painted a horse. The surrounding landscape was soon finished but the horse took me quite a while, and I wasn't even satisfied with the result. You on the other hand have all reasons to be. The movement of the horse is well pictured. Even the gait of the horse is correct and it is possible to imagine the muscles under the skin. Your almost casual brush strokes also emphasize the movement. I like the colors you picked for this horse and I also think you painted the light nicely into this picture. Your treatment of the background makes the horse stand out nicely. You have created a lovely piece of art which is well balanced and composed.

Thank you for the well detailed review, it helps me with my future work. You touch on many important areas that I needed to deal with as I made my way through this painting. Light, depth of field, background, foreground, shadow... Thank you.
