There is an unrealness in the picture that accentuates the lack of reality of the central figure who seems on first glance to be riding tall, with sword uplifted towards the viewer away from the windmill with the moon behind but on looking more closely in fact is riding towards the windmill, with his servant behind. On the other hand the horse might be going towards the windmill but the rider might be riding backwards. This sense of unreality in the knight is accentuated by the sense of reality in the servant who has been filled in, in such a way as to make it quite clear in which direction he is riding. The windmill has a peanut quality with fragile material like blades all adding to the sense of fantasy. There is also a sense of direction as all the elements except the moon are facing away from the viewer - this gives a sense of "chasing the moon"

Good composition. I like the white on black. The Man of La Mach is one of my favorite stories. I believe it was captured nicely with this picture. The effect of the moon in the picture is great.

Great entry for the contest and amazing technique used in creating this image.
Were there windmills anywhere near where the Man of La Mancha roamed?
Nicely done

Thank you very much for your encouraging and kind review. Yes, there were and still are many windmill, in the part of Spain called La Mancha. Don Quixote got famous for a fight against them, when he believed these mills were nasty giants. Of course he lost that fight an got very much thorn up :-)

Maybe because it is all black and white, but it is hard to make out the details in this. Very creatively done though.

Thank you for your kind review. The details are not clearly painted in purpose. Detail should not be easy to make out; because it is night were humans usually do not see well.

One of my favorite novels.
A classic in humanity, devotion and imagination. I love your illustration of it. It has character and it is unmistakable Don Quixote and Sancho facing the wind mills. Love the Black and withe as well. Bravo!

Wow, this monochromatic digital painting is magical in evoking in me the words of the song "To dream, the impossible dream / To right, the unrightable wrong / To love, pure and chaste from afar / To try, when your arms are too weary / To reach the unreachable star. / To fight for the right / Without question or pause / To be willing to march / Into Hell for a Heavenly cause!". What beautiful lyrics and what a beautiful painting to depict it. The use of chalk and crayons to create the picture is masterly. The contrast of black and white and particularly the depiction moon in the background set a very romantic drama in this evocative composition.

Thank you. I appreciate your review very much, but most I appreciate that you truly understand the picture! I almost called it To reach the unreachable star.

For that dark background you could clearly see the unreachable star...I love it.

Great work. Really have to look at this piece to see the beauty. The story is very visible and I love the whole composition. Get a little lost in the sky but it doesn't really matter. Great job.
