Excellent close up of this colorful bird. The splash of red certainly stands out. Good focus and dof.

Gorgeous bird. We have its cousin the Southern Grosbeak here on our property--bright yellow and black. Beautiful song. I wake up to it every morning outside our window. Sunflowers eh. I am going to have to plant tons of sunflowers to see if that is what they like here. If I can attract more of them, what a treat. These guys are pretty special aren't they. Such colors. As soon as I saw this guy I knew it was a Grosbeak of some sort. Unmistakable bill. I think I may have seen this guy when I lived in New Mexico a couple of times? I'm not sure. The really nice thing is that they are fairly large too!

Very nice photo. The green background is such a nice contrast against the other colors. I can see you put a lot of care and thought into the composition of this photo. What I especially like is the sunflower seed. Looks like he is about to do some serious damage to that seed. Gosh, what a beautiful bird.

When I get my camera and telephoto back from the shop, I will try to get the Southern Grosbeak. It is a tough one. It hangs around fairly deep in the trees. Every now and then it comes out...of course when I don't have my camera around my neck. I'm gong to get some sunflowers started. If this one likes it, I suspect they all like them!

Thanks I really enjoyed this...sorry for rambling.

Thank you so very much! All of the seed eaters love sunflower seed! I buy a 50 pound sack and put it on the feeder every morning. There is to many to mention. Like I said in the notes this guy only comes for a couple of weeks in the spring. I have never heard of the southern grosbeak, from your description it sounds like the evening grosbeak. Go to Google and type in Evening Grosbeak and see if this is what you have. I have seen them here too but it has been a long time ago. I see the blue grosbeak in my area but rarely on the feeder.
The Rose Breasted Grosbeak is truly a thrill to see. The colors are magnificent.
If you plant sunflower seed you will love the visitors you will have and you will have some great photo opps!

I live in Ecuador and there are literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of species of birds here. There is a book called, The Birds of Ecuador that is about 750 pages and has 96 plates; each plate with about 25 to 30 full colored pictures of the various species.

The Grosbeak we have is the Southern Yellow Grosbeak which has a body completely bright yellow with mostly black and yelow, and some white on the wings...not to be mistaken with the Hooded Sisken we have, which has a bright yellow underbelly and is black on top with white on its wings. Trying to indentify birds here is difficult. There are some many species and so many closely resemble one another it is amazing.

I have a bird watching friend coming next year. We will probably plan a trip to the Amazon and various other parts of Ecuador just for bird watching. I will try to photograph; he will be immersed in his binocs.

Either this month or next (we are trying to find out) there is a huge migration of birds along the northern part of the coast--millions of birds. I am trying to get a car full of folks to go up there. I think that would be amazing. to see. I believe the birds are mostly shore type birds (that is what I was told), whatever shore type birds are? there is a huge preserve up there...hopefully Columbian drug runners will leave us alone...LOL.

If you ever want to go someplace to birdwatch...think about Ecuador and give me a call.

Sounds like you are in bird heaven! My dad was the bird watcher. He started two local bird clubs. He was the athority on birds in Kentucky. He spent his life looking at birds. I grew up in all this so bird study is my heritage. I am more interested in it now than then. Dad was into photography too and I was in the darkroom at an early age with him. I owe a lot to him. I am sorry he is gone now and wish I had the interest in birds and photography when he was able to get out and go.

Excellent job of filling the frame with the subject. The focus is so sharp and amazingly clear. Capturing the sunflower seed in the beak is masterful and I'm sure a rare shot. The contrast of the background helps the subject (Mr Rose Breasted Grosbeak) stand out beautifully. Great photo.
