i love this! i think horses running free are beautiful. this is a magnificent specimen. you did him justice with your expertise. when i see what someone can do with digital art when they do it well, it makes me consider trying it. i am a traditional artist but i cannot get some of the soft, almost blurry looks you can with your computer. if i had done this horse, it would not have been so beautiful. your talent shows thru well. thank you for sharing this piece of art! annie

Try digital, but this kind of 2D is not easy. I don't think that someone without experience in traditional art could do it my way. It is done very much like I would do oil on canvas, but I think there are a lot more brush strokes. In this picture it must be several thousand. I worked about 60 hours on it. My program is ArtRage. An inexpensive program available on line. I think there is even a free trial. Check it out.
The blur in the sky is a private trick. I painted the background separately in a small size than the horse, than resized the background to the size I use usual. Than painted the horse as a new layer, melted the layers and added more detail to the horse and the grass. ~Cleo

thank you cleo for sharing some of your methods. i know i would have to spend many hours "learning" how to paint all over again in this media. don't know if i have the patience right now but i do admire the results you get. that's one of the great things about art - there is always something new to learn and there is something for everyone. i look forward to seeing more of your work! annie

It's true. Its learning painting allover again. I work about five years with the medium and I am still learning. If you do not have the patience now, keep it in mind. It surely is an interesting experience.
It is a perfect way when the materials are rear, to expensive, or not available as in the Yucatan were I live, And last not least, no more paint splatters on cloth and nose.

Thank you, I appreciate your review very much! Those brush strokes are not illusion. They are real, even if made digitally. There are thousands of them in the painting. I worked about 60 hours on the picture. I would be faster painting it in real oil on canvas if I only could get hold of the materials where I live.

Very nicely composed & executed. The colors on the horse are very realistic & his expression is very nice. Why don't you try perfect resize 7 by ONONE. It is a wonderful resizing plugin that works within Photoshop & several other programs. I find it to be very accurate. Grammysandy

I will try the resizing, but I do not know if it works with my programs. I do not own photoshop.

You should buy photoshop elements. It cost about $79.00.
You can do a lot of digital art with photoshop too. & there are hundreds of plugin programs that do digital editing, painting that work inside of photoshop elements. There is a steep learning curve but in the long run you'll have a great deal more tools to assist you with your creativity. Sandy

No, Where I live the elements are not available and the whole PS [in Spanish] cost $ 2,000.-. I cannot afford this.
I will try to by it in the US, but don't know if I get it through customs and how much import tax they will take. Last time the tried to tax me on a print of my own art work.

I'm NOT referring to Adobe CS6 Photoshop. I'm talking about Adobe Photoshop Elements 10. This is a very similar program but not the Creative suite. You can download the program over the internet. You can download a 30 day trial, from the Adobe site www.adobe.com. If you like it you pay for the serial numbers & keys. The program comes with several languages already built in. You select the language you wish to use during installation. I hope this info helps. Sandy

That is the problem. All those downloads are blocked for Mexico, but I try to download it in the time I am in the US. I just hope I will have enough time and my laptop has enough RAM.[I am only sporadically on line. My husband is in a hospital in San Antonio.]Cleo

Thank you very much! It is a wild horse, I am not sure if those guys get feed, but he surely has a lot of grasslands to feed on at the sanctuary.

I thought you had used the oil brushes because the horse's coat has that very soft look about it. Amazing what software can do. Some I like and some I do not, but this filter I think is very appealing. I like the pose of the horse with his head turned to one side. Some beautiful colours and tones in his coat and also in the grassland beyond. Beautiful sky indicating a sunny summer's day. Very attractive image and a pleasure to view.

[I did not use any filter. It is a painting done on blank canvas, with thousands of small brush strokes. Using filters is not prohibited for 2D painting; as far as I know.]

Even more amazing. Did not realise you did the effect yourself. So much stuff you can use today apart from brushes and paints, it gets confusing. Well done though.

Its much done as painting on canvas. There are thousands of brush strokes in it. I worked weeks on this one. I guess about 60 hours in all. :-)

He is amazingly beautiful.
The way you have done the brush strokes/palette knife has really highlighted his strong face. Your eye is immediately drawn there and then gets to wander over his pretty mane and body. You have used the light very well in this as though a sunbeam is reaching down to kiss him/her.

Thank you very much! Unfortunately it dos not come out right at the resized version. I do not know why, I had never trouble with my paintings before like this. If I use the Batch Converter. I have sparkles, if I use Art rage it looses detail. I have changed it to the Batch Converter version. Which one you think is better?

I liked the other one, but this one is actually even better, with more fine detail showing ;)

Yes, it lost detail in the other. I toned the light on this one slightly down. I think I had added to much metal to the color which shows more on the rezised version.
