I've never seen or heard of such a phenomenon. Great story and an excellent photo. I like the variation of colors in the crawlers. Excellent job of cropping and a fine pre station.

YUCK! They look horrible but it is very interesting and I bet they are destructive. Their defense is awesome but they look totally creepy. Thanks for the warning. Haha

hmm, caterpillars you reckon? i doubt very much if these are caterpillars, im 99% sure these horrible creatures are sawfly larvae, they are usually seen in gum trees but here they must have fallen, good photo but horrible things they are

Thanks very much - didn't count the legs as I wasn't about to get that close but apparently they are very often confused with caterpillars and that is pretty much the only difference they are pretty yuk :) Cheers Mary

This is a typically Australian bush scene and you have captured the individuals of this caterpillar travelling pack so clearly. The pebbly ground, with its creams and browns, is an excellent contrast to the blue shades of the creatures themselves. We used to live right in the bush in Sydney and these were a not uncommon sight - alarming, but not uncommon!
