I love the story of trying to take this shot. I find birds seem to wait until I am just about to shoot then they take off. You captured this one nicely. I like the foliage against the blue background of the sky and I think you did well to get this as sharp as you did with a 300mm lens especially if it is hand held. The edges of the image are not as crisp as you probably wanted, but like I said, with a 300mm lens there is not as much camera shake as one might expect either so well done and thank you for sharing this image.

Thanks for your feedback, yes it was handheld.

Very nice -

Great techs. Focus, exposure and color management are all well achieved. The image might benefit from a slight increase in either saturation or vibrancy.

Composition is very nice and allows for some leading lines (in the branches) as well as texture on the subject.

Nice sharp shot and yes, you are right, they are never close enough ! Your main subject here is of course the bird and since it is looking to the right, the human eye tends to follow that direction so all of the space to the left is redundant. It would be a much better composition if the bird were to the left side of the image.

Thanks - just wondering why such a low rating when you appear to have no issue other than the bird is on the right - which my photographic tutor, who also is a judge for competitions, advised you should always try and put the subject on the right as 99% of people look at a picture from left to right and that is where the eye ends - so best that is where the main subject should be located.

Your tutor is correct to a large extent, particularly in the Western World (The opposite is true in the Eastern culture). but if the bird (or subject) is looking right, the subject should be placed looking into the frame 9 times out of ten.

Thanks I will keep that in mind - disagree about the opposite in Eastern culture definitely tried it out with my daughter in law and her family same thing - maybe they are in the 1% :)

Very good capture of the elusive Kookaburra - I love to hear them and remember the sound from when I visited Australia. In fact I got a toy one that makes the sound for my granddaughter, which she loves! I like the angle you used for this with the pretty gum tree leaves making patterns against the bright blue sky.

Lighting and focus very good showing excellent clarity. Very nice composition. Suzanne

This is a beautiful shot of the bird. You have timed it well. The light, colour and the composition have worked well. Good effort!
