Hi, as the description says, the off centre leaf does add an element of space and connects the flower to something rather than a black background.I find yellow and black always a good colour contrast and it does a great job of emphasising the subject.
The stem of the flower seems to be ending in the middle of the dark though, and not connected with the flower, also while darkening the background you may have brushed over it and it looks unnatural

I understand that this flower is centered because of the contest, but in my opinion it is not enough to just center an item. It has to work as well, and in this case it don't think it does. It is too much negative space on each side, and personally I would have cropped this photo with quite a bit on each side to achieve a better balanced composition.
It is however nothing wrong with the quality of the photo. The focus is sharp and it is fine details to be seen in the center of the flower. The colors are crisp and clear and the exposure very good.
Lovely flower shot, but in need of adjustments. Still I wish you luck with the contest.
