With that bad smell I can understand why it attracts the flies. A very good close up look, focused and framed to show the center of the flower and the green flies. Good job.

A very fine shot. I like the color palette and the excellent detail. The flies are well placed in the frame and the cropping is perfect.

Fred,
An interesting macro picture of this pair of iridescent green Blow Flies busy pollinating this putrid smelling flow with it's red striped & hairy yellow petals. Beautiful composition, framing & lighting with superb camera techniques with sharp focus.

I don't think I have seen you posting any macro shots before, but I could be wrong. That flower indeed offers an interesting background for the two colorful flies, and they are standing out really well against it.
I can easily see where you focus was sitting. In the right side of the center if the flower. In this area every little hair is showing up. The problem is that the focus should have been placed on the flies because they are a bit soft. It is however nothing wrong with the exposure.
I also think the cropping works well, and the two flies have got a very fine placement within the frame giving the composition a nice balance. It is an all together well taken macro shot, but with the focus in the wrong place.

thanks so much Annie; this flower is very large and deep: even at f/16, only the upper fly was in focus;

Yes I can see that the upper fly is in better focus, but still a bit soft. You are most welcome for the review.

Wow, always wanted to see one of those plants in person! Very educational description, thank you for that! :) As far as the photo is concerned, the macro details are superb - love the fact that you can see a close-up of the hairy structure of the plant. Composition is great, wonderfully vibrant colors and good balance, good contrasts. Too bad the lower half is blurry tho.
