What does their roar trying to convey?

A painterly feel as it looks like a realistic oil painting!
Illumination is highlighted on the face giving more initial impact to the roar that we can almost the loudness you've described!

Fantabulous... need I say more. I love the lighting in this post Lori!!! Your moment was an awesome one at the snap. Great detail and color, subtle and contrasting background for a grand composition. I was at the zoo in Berlin when the cats... lions and tigers went at it with the roaring. They have a concrete sleeping are that is barred but open so the public can walk through. It was OUTSTANDING. Certainly a sound that makes a great impression and never leaves you. They simply cannot duplicate it in the cinema that is for sure. Thanks for sharing.

A brilliant profile of this might Lion roaring the ray of light lighting up his muzzle, fangs & eyes. The dark background helps him to pop out of it in three dimensions. Artistic composition, framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.
