I wonder if that is where the term "Old Coot" comes from. Not the prettiest bird species, for sure. Look a little like vulture babies. Your picture is definitely a rare look at a bird I have never seen before.

This is one of those instances where you look at the baby and think "I hope he grows out of that" LOL Nice sharp focus on the head feathers and the colors are well rendered. Good work Fred ~ Steve

This is the perfect entry for the contest Naturally Ugly. so ugly that they become so sweet and innocent looking.
You have caught them at a great POV and so we are caught up with the emotion of the photo, the story.
The unobtrusive background further emphasizes these two "wee beasties" and we can't help but fall in love with them and be happy to share this planet with them!
Technical aspects well done...contrast, saturation (not overcooked), exposure. Light source is felt.
It's a nice catch --- chirp chirp.

Yes I agree, not all babies are cute, however the ripples of green water surrounding these birds with the pop of color on the heads makes one not able to look away

Ugly is an understatement. The capture is very sharp and well lit. The crop brings they images up close and personal for a good view of these small fuzzy babies that I am sure their mother loves. Actually, I should not continue to abuse them as they are part of God's creation and that is no mistake.

I have seen coots many times but never as straggly looking as this pair! Your composition is good giving the pair space to swim into. The image is also sharp and well exposed. Fine effort!
